Putting Green Practices to Work

At iGov, we believe in the responsibility of all businesses to minimize their impact on the environment and we support both public and private endeavors to institute sound policies and practices to meet this challenge. iGov participates in several green initiatives in conjunction with our partners as well as those of the federal government.

iGov, along with the following TACLAN partners, Panasonic, VMware, APC, and BigFix, support the following “green” practices designed to reduce programmatic impact on the environment:
  • Initiation of energy (fuel consumption, heating and air-conditioning) cost-saving efforts
  • Use of computer sleep modes for inactive machines
  • Virtualization of activities when possible
  • Development of energy-efficient shipping and ordering practices

Internally, iGov has initiated its own paperless order processing system. By November 30, 2008, iGov’s order processing system will no longer depend upon any paper. Paper files, paper quotes from our vendors, and printouts of emails all will be a thing of the past. That’s because our order processing system will no longer require us to keep paper files. All correspondence will be stored as electronic attachments to our internal order files. If we receive electronic orders from the government, quotes from our vendors, etc., we will attach them to our e-files. If we receive paper correspondence, we will scan the paper and import to our system, and then send the paper off to be recycled. We anticipate that this will save approximately 3000 pounds of paper in our FY2009.

EPEAT™

EPEAT Bronze, Silver & GoldWe support the Green Electronics Council (GEC)-sponsored EPEAT program as well. It is a mandated federal requirement that institutional purchasers in the public and private sectors evaluate, compare and select desktop computers, notebooks and monitors based on their environmental attributes. EPEAT also provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria for the design of products, and provides an opportunity for manufacturers to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products. Purchasers can use the product lists that are maintained on the EPEAT website that detail their conformance with the federal environmental performance standard for electronic products - IEEE 1680- 2006.

GSA Exchange Sales Program

Planet GSAiGov supports the GSA Exchange Sale Program’s goal to assess the recyclability of all government property and supplies (computers, peripheral equipment, batteries, printer cartridges, etc.) The program is designed to allow federal agencies in their purchase cycles to receive a credit towards replacement of items when the old items are found suitable for recycling.
